Church Approved Eucharistic Miracles


Are the Church approved miracles as well as the Shroud of Turin proven to be made of real blood or could some of them be that fungus, serratia marcescens (sp)?


Church-approved Eucharistic miracles have been shown to be traces of real blood. I recall reading that the blood is always of the same blood type, and that int he Eucharistic miracles in which the host became flesh and was actually subject to examination, it was found to be heart tissue.

On one famous occasion, in Argentina, in an investigation on one such miracle ordered by then-cardinal Bergoglio, the examiner was not told that the tissue he was examining was from a consecrated host that had thus transformed, and to his awe he found that the tissue was behaving not like dead tissue and cells, but like living tissue. There’s a documentary on that matter somewhere.

The Holy Shroud is a whole different story. The marks on it have been studied for decades and have been absolutely impossible to reproduce through any human means. The blood marks are unique to the Passion as described in Scripture. They also perfectly overlap with other similar items such as the Sudarium of Oviedo.

There are also Eucharistic miracles in which the Eucharistic hosts did not change into flesh, but rather remained incorrupt for hundreds of years to this very day. Go figure.

Of course, when the change happens instantaneously, or the host begins to bleed in the priest’s hands, one can hardly attribute it to natural phenomena. But as with all extra-ordinary phenomena, I wouldn’t look too much into it, or try to figure it out.

This is indeed a fascinating subject. It speaks to the awesome power of God.
It’s a boon for non-believers, and sometimes is scary to true believers. :shrug:

I think that’s why the cautionary remark.
Because, in fact, Jesus becomes present Body Blood Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist at every Mass. The miracle is accessible to you, and truly miraculous.
Read up on these wondrous events, yes, but remember the miracle in the Mass.
Just as real, just as amazing.

  1. Well of course they are! :slight_smile: Let’s be clear: transubstantiation is always a miracle, as the consecrated host and wine preserve only the appearance of bread and wine. In very rare occasions through history, a second miracle takes place, when not only the substance but also the species change into the body and blood of Our Lord. They are an extra-ordinary testimony of the Real Presence of the Lord. In other occasions, the consecrated hosts (often after being stolen and then returned) have remained incorrupt. That, too, is a miracle, because it trascends the natural order of things - the species of bread (and wine), ordinarily, deteriorate in a natural way.

The Church is very careful before calling something a miracle. Veery careful. Sometimes it’s upsetting, but she is called to be prudentissima on such matters. Many, many other Eucharistic miracles (besides transubstantiation) take place ordinarily. Healings, conversions, and so forth. But the greatest miracle of them all is the perpetuation of the real presence of Christ. I live by a Perpetual Adoration chapel. You can walk in at 3 am and find 5 to 10 people praying. Lay people, not monks or nuns. People like you and I, who love and are loved by Christ. To me, this is greater a miracle than the change of the species.

  1. When I say “not to look too much into it”, I do not mean not to learn about Eucharistic miracles. The Eucharist is the greatest treasure on Earth, and we can never stop learning from Christ. You may further want to learn about how the Lord through the Eucharist shaped the lives of many saints. The Eucharist not only is the source and summit of the ordinary Christian life, but it is also the source and summit of the extra-ordinary life of the Christian mystics.

But the Blessed Sacrament is just that - a Sacramentum. The Greek word for Sacrament is Mysterion. We simply cannot wrap our mind around it. It is beyond the capability of the finite human mind to comprehend it fully. Thus Aquinas, who was often enraptured in an ecstasy of love before the Blessed Sacrament, wrote the two most famous Eucharistic hymn in the history of the Church:

I devoutly adore you, hidden Deity,
Truly hidden beneath these appearances.
My whole heart submits to you,
And in contemplating you, It surrenders itself completely.

Sight, touch, taste are all deceived In their judgment of you,
But hearing suffices firmly to believe.
I believe all that the Son of God has spoken;
There is nothing truer than this word of truth.

On the cross only the divinity was hidden,
But here the humanity is also hidden.
I believe and confess both,
And ask for what the repentant thief asked.

I do not see the wounds as Thomas did,
But I confess that you are my God.
Make me believe more and more in you,
Hope in you, and love you.

Thus the Great Sacrament let us reverence, prostrate:
and let the old Covenant give way to a new rite.
Let faith stand forth as substitute
for defect of the senses.

If we are captured in awe before the miracles, we will receive light from on high, because Christ wishes to reveal the intimacy of the Real Presence unto the deepest chamber of our soul. Thus the term “miracle” in Latin simply means “wonderful thing, awe-inspiring thing”. It is not miracle to us if we do not let ourselves be in awe before them, and before the One who alone is wonder-worker.

If we try to figure it out, explain it, justify it, and ultimately maybe even deny it, we would entirely miss the point of the wonderful work carried out by the Lord.


I attended a Melkite Catholic Liturgy not too long ago. After the procession with the consecrated Blessed Sacrament, the Congregation chants a very simple and beautiful hymn:

That we may welcome the King of all
invisibly escorted by angel hosts!

If we could see, truly see, we could not bear the sight.

In the Blessed Sacrament, we see the kindness of the merciful Savior, who said: “I do not leave you orphans…a little while and you shall see me…I shall see you again…I am with you always, until the consummation of the age!” (Jn 16).

“*Behold *- writes the blessed Paul, echoing Isaiah - eye has not seen!” (1 Cor 2:9, Is 64:4). This cry penetrates the depths of the human soul, which is urged to seek Him (Acts 17:27). The Spouse of the Canticle of Canticles thus touchingly recounts: “By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not…The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?”, and the Soul in the Spiritual Canticle of the Doctor Mysticus s. John of the Cross thus cries: “Where have You hidden, Beloved, and left me moaning? Now wholly surrender yourself! Do not send me any more messengers…Reveal your presence, and may the vision and your beauty kill me; behold, the malady of love is not cured except by thy presence and before your face.”

Let the vision and your beauty kill me…” Oh, how did our forefathers and patriarchs cry at the adamant words of the living God: “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live” (Exodus 33:20)…what inner tears did their hearts shed, as the Lord spoke through His angelic messengers, or through His prophets, or through the mighty cloud, or from the ark…such tears would not, could not be ignored by Him of whom John the Beloved said: “Deus caritas est", "God is love” (1 Jn 4:10).

Yet they had the blessed hope, that “he would make himself wholly like them, and he would come to them, and dwell with them, and he would walk with them, and eat and drink with them”. So writes s. John of the Cross in his ‘Romance on the Gospel’, which continues: “In perfect love this law holds: that the lover become like the one he loves; for the greater their likeness, the greater their delight. Surely your bride’s delight would greatly increase were she to see you like her, in her own flesh.”

And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us” (Jn 1:14). The Lord makes Himself manifest in the only way that can satisfy the longing of the sanctified Soul, His mystical Bride: by surrendering Himself fully, and beholding unto us His real presence.

But how great His wisdom in revealing Himself the Living Bread! How terrible would be for us, poor sinners, to withstand the presence of the Glorified Christ, “shining like the sun” (Mt 17:2), when even the blessed apostles Peter, James, and John fell to the ground and covered their faces…how would we behold Him, when we are told even the highest angels, the order of Seraphims, cover themselves before His glory?

Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your Savior comes!’ Behold, thy King comes to you, meek” (Is 62:11, Zech 9:9). In the Blessed Sacrament is the glory of God’s loving kindness. “Ego sum panis vivus - I am the living bread” (Jn 6:51), “Be still, and know that I am God” (Ps 46:10).

Saint John Vianney would exclaim filled with love: “See how good He is! He accommodates Himself to our weakness!” St. Peter Eymard rightfully states: “Eucharistic Adoration is the greatest act of holiness on earth. The adoration of Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament is the end of the Church Militant, just as adoration of God in His glory is the end of the Church Triumphant. A holy rivalry, a concert of prayer, a harmony of divine service should exist between the heavenly court and the Eucharistic court here below”.

We know what Holy Communion is - a holy consummation of the union between Christ the Bridegroom and the Church, His Bride. But when the spouses are in love, they also rejoice in the contemplation of one another, in the presence of one another. What a God we have!


The miracles of Lanciano and Buenos Aries were tested to contain true human blood, right, not a fungus as some skeptics have said about some of the miracles.


:slight_smile: Absolutely. The sceptics of the Poland Sokolka Eucharistic Miracle of 2008 made the ‘fungus’ or ‘bacterial’ accusation.

Thanks Josh. Apparently those who said the blood was from a fungus never even SAW The sample, much less been privy to its analysis.


:slight_smile: Yup, but I think it’s a funny accusation because it corresponds to cardiac muscle tissue, which is what they were trying to call some kind of bacterium.

"Obviously, this is absurd” affirmed the specialists of Białystok, also because the material observed corresponds to cardiac muscle and not to a bacterium.
