Popular pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans has been assaulted and carjacked at a Detroit gas station.
Winans tells WXYZ-TV that he was pumping gas when four or five young men jumped him Wednesday afternoon.
Winans is pastor of the 4,500-member Perfecting Church on Detroit’s east side. He gave singer Whitney Houston’s eulogy in February.
The attack happened in the middle of the afternoon, and initially no one came to help. One of his fingers was broken in the attack, but he expressed more concern that Detroit has become so dangerous.
One of the suspects turned himself in after his grandmother pleaded on television for him to do so. The incident has left many Detroit residents afraid to get gasoline for their cars.
