Confusion concerning the precepts of the Church

2043 The fourth precept (“You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church”) ensures the times of ascesis and penance which prepare us for the liturgical feasts and help us acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart.85

The fifth precept (“You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church”) means that the faithful are obliged to assist with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability.

The faithful also have the duty of providing for the material needs of the Church, each according to his own abilities.

I am confused about the last two sentences…they seem redundant. I mean, what is the difference between assisting with the material needs of the Church and providing for them??

The difference is the duties to both assist with and to actually provide.

Essentially we need to be involved in activities required to help with the gathering of material needs, as well as to give.

Hope this helps.

My understanding is very basic …give what you can to the extent possible of your Time, Talents and Treasures. You may not be able to put much into the offering but you may be able lend your time & talents more to help the church.
