Coptic Pope/Holy Land Ban

Pope Tawadros II was recently in the Holy Land for the funeral of an Orthodox cleric. He is the first Coptic Pope to visit the Holy Land in decades due to a ban by his predecessor who held the view that it would not be proper to visit the Holy Land until all their Egyptian muslim brothers were permitted the same privilege.

Considering how important the Holy Land is as a pilgrimage site for christians, I was very surprised to read of this ban. I understand the argument however I am of the view that banning lay christians from even attempting a pilgrimage there I cannot agree with.
