Custody of the Senses

How does one practice custody of the senses?

I have read that religious used to walk with their eyes cast downward to help them keep their minds focused on God. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

To me it means that we should avoid using our senses in ways that would lead us away from God.

*]Avoid looking at indecent pictures, movies, websites
*]Avoid listening to indecent or violent music
*]Don't overindulge the sense of taste to the point of gluttony
*]Leave enough time for silence in our lives so we can actually listen to God in prayer (don't always have the TV or radio on; don't spend too much time on the internet; don't always have to have your senses stimulated with idle "chatter")
