Day of Atonement in the N.T

The Ark of the Covenant disappeared from Israel in the 6th C.B.C. If there was no Ark of the Covenant in Herod’s Temple at the time of Jesus, how was The Day of Atonement celebrated?

The Jewish commentary answer is that it was celebrated as usual with an empty Holy of Holies.

The Christian answer (Benedict XVI) is that the day of Jesus’ death on the cross was the fulfillment for all time of the Day of Atonement.
