Did the Early Church have a Prophet as its Temporal Head?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints claims to be a restoration of the original Church, founded at Pentecost. They also claim to restore the original church organization, with prophets, apostles, deacons, bishops, etc. While that sounds nice, it seems to be hard to claim that a Prophet was at the head of the Church, or that Peter was a prophet. It also seems hard to claim that all of the original apostles were prophets.

LDS, how do you see this issue of the early Church organization and the current LDS restoration of that organization?
