I’m creating a puzzle calendar using Scripture quotes. Are Bible quotes public domain? Do I need permission to cite Scripture from the Douay-Rheims Bible?
While the books of the Bible are obviously not copyrighted by their original authors, modern translations of the Bible may well be copyrighted by their translators. That is why most secular crossword puzzles use the original King James Version when creating clues that use Bible citations. You can check the status of the translation you want to use by reading the publication information on the copyright page. If the translation is covered by a copyright, you’ll have to check with the publisher for its requirements for citation.
