Do parishes keep Mass attendance records?

My cousin and I were discussing the offertory envelopes, and she said that even if you don’t have money, you should put an empty envelope in the basket to show the church that you attend regularly. She said that’s how they keep track of when parishioners attend Mass. I went to Catholic schools for 13 years AND attended RCIA and never heard of this. Please clarify. Thank you!

So far as I know, parishes don’t keep Mass attendance records of parishioners. Placing an empty offertory envelope in the basket is likely merely to be an annoyance to parish staff who must count the money the following week. To indicate to a parish that you are a regular attendee – for example, because you want to be married in that parish – the way to go about doing so is to register.
