I have a friend who is in the Army. He is not allowed to wear anything on his neck except for his dog tags. He keeps his scapular in his pocket. Is this acceptable because he cannot wear it?
Sure. A scapular is basically intended to be a layman’s version of a religious habit. If he or someone he knows has the sewing skills and it wouldn’t get him in trouble with his superiors if they found out – or if he is willing to be as discreet as possible and take the chance of not “passing inspection” of his uniforms – he could also sew the scapular pieces (minus the neck strings) into a hem of his uniform. He may prefer to continue to carry the scapular in his pocket and he is free to do that.
