Does anyone know what language was spoken in Nineveh?

My son wants to know…

The ancient inhabitants were Assyrians. Tablets written in Cuneiform were found at the site of Nineveh. Here’s what the written language of the Assyrians looked like
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuneiform

There were several different variants of language that were written in Cuneiform and spoken in the region. If I’m not mistaken, the Assyrians spoke Akkadian, but I could be wrong. HOWEVER… a professor I work with happens to be an expert in cuneiform and actually speaks all of those languages. If you’re willing to wait until after the new year for an answer, I could find out definitively for you.

I can confirm that the Assyrians primarily spoke Akkadian, which in turn was heavily influenced by Sumerian.

I love these forums! It’s so kind of everyone to respond! Merry Christmas!
