Does baptism = forgiveness of sins?

Does the Catholic Church believe that all sins are washed away at baptism? If you are an adult at baptism, are all of your sins washed away?

Also, when Christ died on the cross, he atoned for our sins. If he already atoned for our sins, why is confession necessary? Could you repent on your own through prayer and asking God for forgiveness? Why is it necessary to talk to a priest at confession?
