Does My Mom Need An Annulment?

My mom is really distressed. 45 years ago, she and my father divorced. My mom, under the advice of her mother, didn’t file for an annulment because she had no plans to get married again. Years have passed and my mom has never remarried, and she goes to Mass regularly and receives the sacraments.

Recently, in a local Catholic newspaper, she read that a marriage that has ended in divorce needed to be annulled before receiving the sacraments. She was told by her mother that she only needed one to remarry. My mom started to cry because she has been receiving the sacraments, thinking she hadn’t done anything wrong.

Does my Mom need an annulment?

No, she does not need an annulment. An annulment is only needed in order to be married after one has been divorced. I think she may have misunderstood the article.
