Donald Trump to Foreign Workers for Florida Club: You’re Hired

#1

From today’s New York Times:

Donald J. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach describes itself as “one of the most highly regarded private clubs in the world,” and it is not just the very-well-to-do who want to get in.

Since 2010, nearly 300 United States residents have applied or been referred for jobs as waiters, waitresses, cooks and housekeepers there. But according to federal records, only 17 have been hired.

In all but a handful of cases, Mar-a-Lago sought to fill the jobs with hundreds of foreign guest workers from Romania and other countries.

In his quest for the Republican presidential nomination, Mr. Trump has stoked his crowds by promising to bring back jobs that have been snatched by illegal immigrants or outsourced by corporations, and voters worried about immigration have been his strongest backers.

But he has also pursued more than 500 visas for foreign workers at Mar-a-Lago since 2010, according to the United States Department of Labor, while hundreds of domestic applicants failed to get the same jobs.

The visas are issued through one of a handful of legal and often-debated programs through which employers can temporarily hire foreign workers when American labor is not available. As part of its applications for the visas submitted to the Labor Department, Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago attested that in the vast majority of cases it was unable to fill the positions with American workers, or, as he told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in September, “getting help in Palm Beach during the season is almost impossible.”

Asked why his club must seek so many foreign workers when Americans have applied for the same positions, Mr. Trump said in a telephone interview from Mar-a-Lago this month: “The only reason they wouldn’t get a callback is that they weren’t qualified, for some reason. There are very few qualified people during the high season in the area.”

Trump isn’t the first one to do this - Mackinaw Island, Michigan is known for its Grand Hotel.
Every year employees come from Jamaica to work there. The working people cannot afford to live on or near the Island and it is probably the same case in Palm Beach.

So where are all the guest workers from Romania living?

I hope he’s asked this question tonight at the debate as he keeps saying we should be hiring Americans. Lots of high tech companies do this too. They contract workers and pay them twice as much per hour and no benefits, instead of promoting their own employees, particularly telecom companies. Then when they’re contracts are up, and a regular opening arises they usually get it because of experience. I imagine Trump does this all the time too, but I never hear this talked about.

Yeah, right. Because it’s just such a backwater.

This will not hurt Trump unless he’s hiring illegals.

The answer is that a contractor hired these people for Trump’s project. There were here illegally so they were “fired” and sent back home.

Donald Trump Thinks American Workers Aren’t Good Enough for the Trump Organization

The article is too long and detailed to post.

This one is not very pretty either

#9

It undercuts his message that the reason to keep illegals from taking American jobs is to protect American citizens’ access to jobs. Now the message is “It’s OK to supplant American workers with foreigners as long as it is done legally.” Somehow that message doesn’t seem so appealing as a campaign slogan.

Rubio made use of this line of attack in the debate last night, according to what I’ve read.

#11

There are many details to be dragged out if one’s to argue the issue of trumps hiring. The bottom line is, Rubio is trying to out trump trump on immigration. That’ll never be successful. People out there believe trump on this issue not Rubio. Rubio supported the gang of eight.

It also points to the fact however that Trump doesn’t really have a consistent view about anything, really. He may be saying or doing something next week that is completely opposed to what he is promising now.

So now let’s get to the details part:

politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/feb/25/marco-rubio/marco-rubio-says-donald-trump-had-pay-1-million-hi/

The law suit about the illegal polish workers happened 36 years ago. The workers were not hired by Trump but by his contractor.

"It was Trump’s contractor, not Trump himself, who hired 200 undocumented Polish workers to demolish a building to make room for Trump Tower in Manhattan. Trump said he didn’t know. The lawsuit sought $1 million in damages, and a judge ruled that Trump had to pay $325,000 plus interest.

But the case was appealed and before it was retried, Trump settled the case out of court, so it’s unclear how much he ended up doling out.

Rubio’s statement is partially accurate but missing that context. We rate Rubio’s claim Half True."

This subject is amusing.

Completely aside from the inability to know who a subcontractor is hiring, it’s very difficult for anyone to know the legal status of someone he’s hiring.

One needs to keep in mind that one is prohibited by law from questioning the facially-valid ID of a work applicant. And virtually all illegals have “facially-valid” fake ID. All E-Verify does is verify the validity of the presented social security number. So if that checks out, imagine what happens if an employer further questions an applicant because, for example, the applicant has a foreign accent, or appears to be Hispanic or Asian or Middle Eastern or anything. And it’s not a bit better for the employer if he questions the employees of a subcontractor. Since fake ID makers use real social security numbers (often bought from identity thieves by the batch) the social security numbers always come up “valid” unless the applicant bought from a bad dealer.

If the employer further questions the identity, he has broken the law and will be heavily penalized if he does that because it’s “discriminatory”.

The only real “cure” there used to be to hiring illegals was to make a deal with ICE that you’ll secretly send ID to them to really check out. Then maybe (in the past, not now) ICE would “raid” your place of business.

Until employers are able to actually check who they are hiring, nobody in this country can ever be sure he/she is NOT hiring illegals.
