A long time ago was it socially acceptable for a priest to drop-in (casually visit) his congregation at their home without any notice in advance?

Yep. :yup: And it was a great honor to entertain him and ask him to dinner.

These days I think it depends where you live - in rural areas, I’m told it’s still done since people are more likely to be at home (on farms, etc) whereas in urban areas - good luck finding people at home during the day. A priest also pointed out to me that it’s important to be prudent in accepting invitation to dinner etc in order to avoid any impression of favouritism amongst parishioners.
