Eastern Orthodoxy and Suicide

I approach this subject as a former Orthodox and as this topic is currently being made prominent due to Robin William’s death.

I know that in times past virtually all churches stigmatized suicides and often recharged burials. It saddens me to see this severe attitude continuing among the Orthodox. Funerals are denied or other times they’re conducted with the royal doors closed, which one thinks would send a clear message to mourners as to the departeds Destiny. And I find that a cruel practice, considering the families of those that die this way must be devastated as is.

Would someone care to explain this practice? Does Byzantine Catholicism treat suicides in a similar way (no funeral or royal doors closed)?

Many thanks. I know this is a hard subject.
