What is the difference between an Ecclesial Community and a Church? Moreover, what is the Latin term for each?
A true “Church” is a Christian group that maintains two things in an unbroken line from the Apostles:
- Apostolic Succession
- A belief in Transubstantiation
Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox, and the Oriental Orthodox are true churches.
All other Protestant groups are “Ecclesial Communities” because although they are Christian, they lack one or both of the two requirements to be considered a “Church”.
Churches = Ecclesiae
Ecclesial communities = Communitates ecclesiales
