Why do some posts have an envelope symbol next to the timestamp and others do not? What does it signify?
I was wondering that same thing!
It does show up for PM’s, of course. I haven’t seen it on plain vanilla posts. Anyone have an example?

Oh. That is, I believe, an indication that the post was created via email, as opposed to being done via the computer reply.
Some people have their preferences set to generate emails for different condition, for example, “watching” thread vs “tracking” thread. When someone posts in that condition, the person who has their preferences set that way get an email. If the person then replies via email to that message, it shows up on the thread with an envelope
