Exclusive: Radioactive material stolen in Iraq raises security fears

Iraq is searching for “highly dangerous” radioactive material stolen last year, according to an environment ministry document and seven security, environmental and provincial officials who fear it could be used as a weapon if acquired by Islamic State.

The material, stored in a protective case the size of a laptop computer, went missing in November from a storage facility near the southern city of Basra belonging to U.S. oilfield services company Weatherford (WFT.N), the document obtained by Reuters showed and officials confirmed.

A spokesman for Iraq’s environment ministry said he could not discuss the issue, citing national security concerns. A Weatherford spokesman in Iraq declined to comment, and the company’s Houston headquarters did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

This is a red letter headline per Drudge; sounds a bit alarmist but something to be wary of.

In other news, a big explosion has happened near an Ankara, Turkey military installation as well. We will see how that develops.

I have heard a lot of stories of nuclear material missing or stolen over the years. so far, nothing has come of it.

#3

Yes, Ive heard of this happening before, although on the black market, Im sure anything nuclear probably has a very high price, so that keeps most radicals away. It may even be more than ISIS can afford.

#4

Would that material be considered WMD?

#5

No. The material itself is not a wmd. Someone might use the material in a weapon, but a dirty bomb is not a wmd either.

#6

Some oil company had it over there to help look at oil wells.

I heard some discussion on it but in laymen’s terms, it sounds like it could be dangerous though they don’t have a whole lot of it.

There are some very real possibilities that we should not comfort ourselves in thinking won’t happen. These are dangerous times because some chemical weapons have fallen into ISIS’s filthy hands. Syria had these weapons, having used them in the not so distant past. The WMDs that were believed/not believed, were trucked into Syria from Iraq years ago. (seems like just yesterday.) They were observed by our military forces in the very beginning days of the war. Probably much of the stuff would be unstable, maybe no longer potent, but maybe some would still suit ISIS. We (the average American) do not KNOW but it has been said within the last month that their filthy hands are in possession. We do KNOW who they would most like to use them on - bringing death to America.

The mustard/nerve blister agent and serin gas have been named. Its not pretty to learn about - it is the stuff of nightmares. Gas masks and protective chem suits would be mandatory attire and the wearer has to be trained to use them. Otherwise, if the alarm is sounded in enough time, those able to be secured inside, with filtered ventilation, etc., surviving would be possible.

Our 2nd Amendment right to bear arms is our first, most able way to defend ourselves. Thanks to the wonderful authors of the Constitution but we need bigger and better - it all comes down to the Commander in Chief. Sobering thought isn’t it?

Well, we can be absolutely positive that ISIL would have no moral qualms or hesitations about making and using such a device.

Considering their well-documented mind-blowing cruelty, that much is a given. Same goes for biological and chemical weapons.

They found the material intact, terrorists do not have it.
