The Saturday vigil/vespers (depending on how far back ya wanna go) simply began to be accepted as fulfilling the Sabbath obligation for Christians who had difficulty making the Sunday obligation. There was a document somewhere around Vatican 2 explaining the permission. Forget the name.

This is an excellent incentive over Catholicism for jaded-but-still-idealistic protestants seeking “the Ancient Church”, but prefer an “Ancient Church” that doesn’t make them change too many major things about their life that wasn’t already demanded by Protestantism.
Which one? Chrysostom’s? Basil’s? Both in present form have additions that date to as late as the middle ages.
