Female Indonesian police recruits forced to undergo ‘virginity tests’

Female applicants wanting to join Indonesia’s police force must undergo a two-fingered ‘virginity test’ to ensure their hymens are intact. The website for the national police states that all woman who wish to become police officers, “…should keep their virginity.”

According to Human Rights Watch:

“So-called virginity tests are discriminatory and a form of gender-based violence – not a measure of women’s eligibility for a career in the police,” said Nisha Varia, associate women’s rights director at Human Rights Watch.
