For Christian Music Lovers!

I was talking with a friend on here and had a great idea! :newidea: I was thinking how powerful and moving music can be in the Christian journey, and I thought Why not share and discuss with other brothers and sisters different songs and hymns that are enjoyed! Not only is it a great way to be moved and hear God’s truth in a unique way, but we can all be exposed to different genres of Christian music.

So I’ll go first (and remember, you don’t have to be nearly as long winded as I am! Sometimes I just have *way *too much time on my hands!).

This song is called “Daylight” by Brave Saint Saturn. —> youtube.com/watch?v=zZ48C8z7aOQ&feature=related

It’s rock/screamo music I guess, although slower, and I confess it’s a rather “like it or hate it” kind of song (musically anyway). The lyrics, in case you can’t catch them all, are as follows:

*did you hear the news today
i’m not coming home,
no
and i wished it all away
i felt so alone
and the darkness crept it’s way
like stars we know will die too soon
there is never any sunrise here in the shadows of eclipsing moons
crawling on a tightrope
the bravest thing i have is hope

daylight, save me
daylight, save me
tonight, tonight

halogen, the lights will flicker
incadescent burning lies
and the silence stands for nothing
desperate i search the skies aching for a spark
trembling in pitchest dark

Mission Control: U.S.S. Gloria, this is mission control, do you copy?
we have lost contact with the U.S.S. Gloria

U.S.S. Gloria: Mission Control, this is the U.S.S. Gloria, do you read me?
Mayday, we have lost primary guidance functions

News Reporter: The crew is now out of radio contact.
presently there is no way for us to know whether they
are alive or dead.
our hopes and prayers go out with you all.

Mission Control: U.S.S. Gloria, this is mission control, do you copy?

U.S.S. Gloria: Houston this is the U.S.S. Gloria.
good to hear your voice
we are coming out of the eclipse now.
i see the sunlight. it’s beautiful
the sunlight is beautiful.

Jesus Christ, Light of the World
You never did forget me
and when i bled in darkness, You held
me
still held me
when desparate nights i cursed You
You loved me, still loved me
Jesus Christ, You dry the tears
You break my heart of stone
Your words are life
cut marrow through
the darkness, to the bone
a heart of flesh You gave me
only You can save me

Savior
Daylight
I am coming home*

A friend introduced me to this band. The lead singer, Reese Roper, was the lead singer of “Five Iron Frenzy” and “Roper” (for those music fans who may be familiar with these bands).

From Wikipedia: "Brave Saint Saturn published their first three albums as “The Saturn 5 Trilogy”.

*The Saturn 5 Trilogy tells the story of a fictional NASA “Saturn 5 Mission,” where the crew of the spacecraft “Gloria” is sent to map the rings of Saturn. While in orbit around Saturn’s moon, Titan, the Gloria suffers a crippling disaster that leaves the craft stranded in geosynchronous orbit on the dark side of the moon. The crew is cut off from radio contact with Earth and the light of the sun, and both the crew and their families fear they are lost forever. The final album of the trilogy, Anti-Meridian, chronicles rescue by the crew of the Gloria by another spacecraft, the “Starling.” “Lieutenant Hoerig” saves the mission at the cost of his own life. The rest of the crew returns to Earth in one of the Starling’s escape pods. Several of the songs deal with the crew’s thoughts and remembrances in the aftermath of their safe return.

The Saturn 5 Trilogy uses the loss and subsequent rescue of the crew as a metaphor for several Christian themes including death, resurrection, redemption, and self-sacrifice."*

I love this song mostly because it’s honest Christianity, in the sense that’s it’s about feeling lost or hopeless; something I think we all feel from time to time (although may hate to admit), yet God is still with us, and still loves us.

There previously had been a thread about the worst hymns:D
For favorite hymns, I’d have to vote for anything by Ralph Vaughn Williams.Or from the old shape note hymnbooks. And yes, I know these are not specifically Catholic.

#3

Really?!?! LOL!!! That’s kind of funny.

Ralph Vaughn Williams…I don’t think I’m familiar with him. Does he have any “big hits”?

#4

I’d guess “For All The Saints” might be his best known “hit.”

#5

I will have to see if I can find it. Thanks!

That’s a really good song! I think one of my favorite hymns is “Be Thou My Vision”

Be Thou my vision oh Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought by day or by night.
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my Light.

Be Thou my wisdom and thou my true word
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord
Thou my Great Father and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with thee one

Riches I heed not nor man’s empty praise.
Thou mine inherintance now and always.
Thou and thou only first in my heart.
High King of Heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won.
May I reach Heaven’s joy’s bright Heaven’s sun
Heart of my own heart whatever befalls.
Still be my vision, Oh Ruler of all.

This is one of my favorite songs by Stellar Kart! :harp:

*I am all around you
I see everywhere you see
I am everything you believe

If the stars don’t shine tonight
And tomorrow forgets the light
Hold on
Hold on to me

You are loved completely
You mean everything to me
You will always be here with me

If the stars don’t shine tonight
And tomorrow forgets the light
Hold on
Hold on to me

With everything you have
Hold on to me
Don’t be afraid
I’m here to stay

If the stars don’t shine tonight
And tomorrow forgets the light
Hold on
Hold on to me

If your hope is running dry (running dry)
If your dreams have waved goodbye (waved goodbye)
Hold on
Hold on to me
Hold on to me*

Love it. I’d sing it for you if you could hear me. :stuck_out_tongue: Here’s a link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDm8UcHI17g

That’s awesome. Love the music video. Did you realize that video used scenes from the movie Apollo 13? It’s a good movie, but it does have some language in it… and maybe some other things, I can’t remember. But anyway…

Another good song is “Deathbed” by Relient K, but it’s a really long song, so I don’t know if I should post the lyrics.

There’s a great family band from Louisiana called “L’ Angelus.” They sing traditional Catholic hymns & Cajun music, plus some original songs they’ve composed.

Cool song! Here’s one I really like by Tenth Avenue North. Okay, I like all songs by them, but this is a really good one that doesn’t get played on the radio:

How long must I pray, must I pray to you?
How long must I wait, must I wait for you?
How long til I see your face, see you shining through?
I’m on my knees, begging you to notice me.
I’m on my knees, Father will you turn to me?

One tear in the driving rain,
One voice in a sea of pain,
Could the Maker of the stars
Hear the sound of my breaking heart?

One Life, that’s all I am!
Right now I can barely stand!
If you’re everything you say you are would you
Come close, and hold my heart?

I’ve been so afraid, afraid to close my eyes.
So much can slip away before I say goodbye.
But if there’s no other way, then I’m done asking why,
Cause I’m on my knees, begging you to turn to me.
I’m on my knees! Father will you run to me?

One tear in the driving rain,
On voice in the sea of pain,
Could the Maker of the stars
Hear the sound of my breaking heart?

One life, that’s all I am!
Right now I can barely stand!
If you’re everything you say you are won’t you
Come close, and hold my heart?

So many questions without answers…'
Your promises remain.
I can’t see, but I’ll take my chances
to hear you call my name,
to hear you call my name…

gasp You listen to L’Angelus?!? I LOVE them!!! I got to see them at a food festival in Baton Rouge. They even signed my CD. Wow. You’re the only person I’ve ever met outside of my family that’s even heard of them!

#12

I’ve only ever heard two songs by Tenth Avenue North, but I like those two. Love this one. The video almost made me cry.

#13

You probably know By Your Side and Love is Here because those are really the only two they play on the radio. Both are from the Over and Underneath CD. I love all of the songs, but one and that one I really like. Have you heard Beloved?

*Love of my life
Look deep in my eyes
There you will find what you need
Give me your life
Lust and the lies
The past you’re afraid I might see
You’ve been running away from me

You’re my beloved
Lover I’m yours
Death shall not part us
It’s you I died for
For better or worse
Forever we’ll be
Our Love it unites us
It binds you to me
It’s a mystery

Love of my life
Look deep in my eyes
There you will find what you need
I’m the giver of life
I’ll clothe you in whine
My immaculate bride you will be
Oh come running home to me

You’re my beloved
Lover I’m yours
Death shall not part us
It’s you I died for
For better or worse
Forever we’ll be
Our Love it unites us
It binds you to me

Well you’ve been a mistress, my wife
Chasing lovers it won’t satisfy
Won’t you let me make you my bride
You will drink of my lips
And you’ll taste new life

Cause you’re my beloved
Lover I’m yours
Death shall not part us
It’s you I died for
For better or worse
Forever we’ll be
Our Love it unites us
And it binds you to me

You’re my beloved
Forever we’ll be
Our love it unites us
And it binds you to me
It’s a mystery
It’s a mystery*

You’re right. :stuck_out_tongue: By Your Side and *Love is Here *are the only ones I know. By Your Side I like especially. I love the lyrics to Beloved! Don’t have time at the moment to check out the link. I’ll do it later. Gotta go watch *The Sound of Music *with my family.

Okay, now I’ve watched it. Awesome!

Here’s a good one by Run Kid Run. It’s called Freedom

All my chains I can’t disengage
And I don’t believe that I want to
One hand sings your praise
The other brings me shame
I have selfishness to blame

And I’m singing for freedom
I know I’m not the only one
Praying to the one
Who can bring me this freedom
I’m ready for change

Broken down I lay
I keep holding my chains
No longer bound but here I stay
I scream Father please
I need rescuing
I need You and You alone

And I’m singing for freedom
I know I’m not the only one
Praying to the one
Who can bring me this freedom
I’m ready for change

Still You patiently await
Yet I won’t just let go
I see You and You alone
Saying come follow Me
Despair has come so you can see
Release

And so I’m singing for freedom
And so I’m singing for freedom
The time has come
Separation lost the war to love
Take My hand
Grace has found you where you once began
You’re alive, you’re alive
In the waking of new life
Take My hand
In the end there’s only love
There’s only love

There’s only singing for freedom
I know I’m not the only one
Praying to the One
Who can bring me this freedom
I’m ready for I’m ready for
And Father please
I need rescuing
I need You and You alone

Ooh, I like that one! This is cool because I’ve never heard of the artists you bring up. I’m learning about new ones now:).

Here’s one I really like by Phil Wickham. It’s called Crumble to Pieces.

*You raise me beyond the skies, into a city of eternal light
Looking down on the stars, I fly into heaven, caught up in your arms

I Breathe Your fragrance, taste your goodness,
Crumble to pieces
Into Your love
In Your presence all my existence
Crumbles to pieces
Into Your love

Im speechless what can I say
Words become tears
As You wipe them away
All my kisses and crowns at your feet
Fire of heaven burn love over me

Its such a beautiful story
Im face to face with the King of glory
You rescued someone unworthy, I know this is love *

Glad you like it. I think I’ve heard of every artist so far, but not the songs. This is such a good thread! (And we’ve finally made it to 2 pages! :p)

Here’s one of my all-time favorites. This is called *Opposite Way *by Leeland.

*Living in the same town
For all these years
Doing the same old things
Hanging with the same crowd
And it’s starting to get crippling
You’ve never felt in place
And you tell yourself it’s all okay
But something’s different today
You want to live the opposite way

And it seems like your locked in a cage
You need to find a way of escape
When everyone is setting the pace
It’s okay to run the opposite way

The Father sent His Son down
The light of men
The cross He bore was crippling
Rejected in His own town
They couldn’t see the sun shining

He knelt in the garden and prayed
Father let this cup pass from Me
It’s not Your will for Me to stay
Your will for Me is the opposite way

And it seemed like He was locked in a cage
And He couldn’t find a way of escape
But through the cross He conquered the grave
My Jesus ran the opposite way*

I did! I never saw Apollo 13 myself, but I heard it was quite good.

I’ll have to check out that song! I’ve heard a lot of Reliant K’s songs, but that one in particular doesn’t sound familiar at all. Thanks!

#19

My first thought was “Wow, what a voice!”. I just love his voice.

#20

I’ve heard this band before! Very very nice. I love this band!

Is anyone familiar with the very short lived band “Seven Places”? They have two songs in particular I really really enjoy; one is “Holes in His Hands”

youtube.com/watch?v=B2_plqhydNo

It has such powerful lyrics too:

*You said your days were over
That the sun would never shine again
From glory days, to wicked ways
You’ve lost your forgiveness of sin
You walk through your desert
Wondering why and what you’ve become
You said you’ve slipped through the fingers
Of the hands of God

[Chorus:]
You’ve fallen out of His hands
Or atleast that’s what you said
The truth is not that the truth is this
The only way to esacape
The Lord is if you crawl
Through the holes in His hands.

I ran away I did not lead you say in the darkness you stand
But you are not forgotten, you’re in His mighty hands
Now turn aside and see this sight, a flame that does not consume
To show you that He’s called your name
You’re one of His chosen few

[Chorus]

Come closer, come closer now to Him
Come closer, come closer
His name is I am that I am
You said your days were over
That the Son would never use you again
But by one man’s disobedience
Came One who’s conquered your sin

[Chorus]*

The other song isn’t really a song but a sermon (where the band got their name “Seven Places”). It STILL makes me teary-eyed.
