A Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

O Holy Spirit, Divine Counselor, we adore you as our true God; one with God our loving Father; one with God His beloved Son. We adore you, and we unite ourselves in the adoration You receive from the holy angels and saints. We entrust You with our hearts, and we offer You our ardent thanksgiving for all the blessings You ceaselessly bestow upon us.
**
O Holy Spirit**, Who grants all supernatural gifts, we thank You for bestowing Your fullest favor, the Incarnation, upon the Immaculate Virgin, Mother of God. We beg You to visit upon us Your every blessing of mercy and grace that we may please our beloved Abba by loving His Son as He does.

O Holy Spirit, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, make our souls worthy of eternal union with the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ. Perfect our beings for His sake, and receive our humblest thanks for actualizing all the divinely-bestowed potential within us.

Grant us the gift of holy fear, so that this wholesome awe may be our only fear; and act on us as a check to prevent us from falling back into sin, for which we beg pardon.

Grant us the the gift of piety, so that we may serve You with increased fervor, follow Your holy inspirations lovingly and promptly, and observe your divine precepts with greatest fidelity.

Grant us the gift of knowledge, “enlighten the eyes of our heart,” so that in knowing the divine will, as enlightened by Your holy teaching, we may walk without deviation in the narrow path of eternal salvation.

Grant us the gift of fortitude, so that we may courageously overcome all the assaults of the devil, temptations of the flesh, and all the dangers of the world which threaten the salvation of our souls.

Grant us the gift of counsel, so that we may choose what is most conducive to our spiritual advancement, ever avoiding the wiles and snares of the tempter, to remain fully and freely united to the will of divine providence.

Grant us the gift of understanding, so that we may apprehend the divine
mysteries and, by the contemplation of heavenly things, detach our thoughts
and affections from the vanity of this world as we seek only life eternal in Heaven.

Grant us the gift of wisdom, so that we may rightly direct all our thoughts and
actions as being mindful of Heaven as our last end, and divinity as our perfect love.

Most Holy Trinity, by Your infinite mercy, may we wholly love and obey You in this life by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, that we give praise, thanks and honor to You for all eternity, one God forever and ever. AMEN

Gifts of the Holy Spirit

There are 9 spiritual gifts, or gifts of the Holy Spirit. You must be born again, and receive the Holy Spirit baptism to be eligible for these gifts. Keep in mind, these are all supernatural gifts given by the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12-14)

Spiritual gifts can be split up into three categories…

1.) Gifts of Utterance
-Gift of Prophecy
-Gift of Tongues
-Gift of Interpretation of Tongues

2.) Gifts of Power
-Gift of Faith
-Working of Miracles
-Gifts of Healings

3.) Gifts of Revelation
-Word of Wisdom
-Word of Knowledge
-Discerning of Spirits

Now we will give a definition of each spiritual gift…

1.) Gift of Prophecy–A supernatural utterance in a known tongue or language. It will always edify, exhort, and comfort those that hear. (1 Cor. 14:3)

2.) Gift of Tongues–Divers kinds of tongues is supernatural utterance by the Holy Spirit in languages never learned by the speaker, not understood by the mind of the speaker, nor necessarily always understood by the hearer.

3.) Gift of Interpretation of Tongues–The supernatural showing forth by the Holy Spirit the meaning of an utterance in other tongues.

4.) Gift of Faith–A supernatural endowment by the Holy Spirit whereby that which is uttered or desired by man, or spoken by God, shall eventually come to pass. Don’t get this gift confused with standard faith in God’s Word that every believer has, or should have.

5.) Working of Miracles–A miracle is a supernatural intervention in the ordinary course of nature; a temporary suspension of the accustomed order through the Spirit of God.

6.) Gifts of Healings–The purpose of the gifts of healings is to deliver the sick and destroy the works of the devil in the human body.

7.) Word of Wisdom–A supernatural revelation by the Spirit of God concerning the divine purpose in the mind and will of God (future tense).

8.) Word of Knowledge–A supernatural revelation by the Holy Spirit of certain facts (past and/or present) in the mind of God.

9.) Discerning of Spirits–Supernatural insight into the spirit world.

The Word of God tells us as believers to follow after love, and desire spiritual gifts ( 1 Cor. 14:1). The Holy Spirit gives the gifts as He wills, but you must desire them first and not be ignorant of them (1 Cor. 12:1). The gifts you receive are not for your benefit, but for you to minister to others in the love of God! So go forth in the power of the Holy Spirit proclaiming Jesus Christ to the world, and put your faith into action!
