Forgive my ignorance on the after life

#1

I went to church today and the priest talked at considerable length about purgatory and the resurrection of the body. I was a Catholic in name only until last year and although I’ve heard this 1,000 times it never really sunk in.

What happens to us when we die? We are judged and sent to purgatory, heaven or hell. Right? When Jesus comes again our bodies will be resurrected and he will establish his kingdom on Earth. Right? So everyone will leave heaven and purgatory and reside on the Earth? Could someone with more knowledge clear this up for me?

I sure hope someone CAN clarify this one since I thought everyone’s body rose also. However, first - I don’t think the Bible says the resurrected bodies (reunited with their souls) would reside on earth - but I’m not sure. Why on earth, if Heaven is the better place - where God is? Also, a friend’s interpretation is that only the souls of the just would be reunited with their bodies…Too many people try to interpret the Bible, and I do wish we could get good Theological clarification on this.

Read 1Thessolonians 4:13-18

It would have been todays reading if we hadn’t been celebrating
the cathedral of Rome.

One part says: Then we who are still alive will be taken up in the
clouds, together with them (meaning those who already died)
to meet the Lord in the air.

I don’t see why we would go and meet the Lord in the air if
we were just coming back down to earth.

**This is when the Lord returns to earth as Judge.

You don’t think He did a U-turn in mid-air, did you?

WE are the ones who do the U-turn as we escort Him down to earth.

St. John Chrysostom discusses this very thing in one of his homilies.**

Wait so when we die we are judged and sent to heaven, hell or purgatory. When Jesus returns we will return with him and be reunited with our bodies and live with him on Earth? Those living at the time will be judge and allowed to stay in his kingdom on Earth or sent to hell? Not trying to be a jerk here I’m just trying to make since of it all.

**The earth as we know it passes away at that point. Sorry. Should have told you.

And wherever Jesus is is always automatically heaven, right?

Don’t worry about trying to come up with some agenda for Him to follow. That was the mistake of the Bible experts of 2000 years ago–the Pharisees.**
