Four oilsands plants slated for Edmonton

A fourth company has joined a lineup of muti-billion dollar oilsands upgrader projects planning to open shop in a heavy industrial district on Edmonton’s eastern ourskirts… Synenco Energy Inc. announced it will build a $2.8 billion processing plant in Sturgeon County northeast of the city.

The project is part of its $5.3 billion Northern Lights Project, which will mine oilsands in northern Alberta and ship the molasses-like bitumen to the processing plant to be upgraded into refinery-ready crude oil. Bitumen is the thick oil that is separate from the sand in the oilsands…

Synenco president Todd Newton… points to industry and government forecasts that oilsands output will at least triple into a range of three to five million barrels per day over the next 10 years.
