G 20 International Prayer and Fasting Campaign

#1

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Pittsburgh has been honored to host the meeting of the G 20 nations on September 24th and 25th.The focus of this international gathering will be on the worldwide economic recession. As Catholics, we are committed to a response to the economic crisis that is rooted in the dignity of work, the equality of all peoples, and the recognition that all economic issues questions must be rooted, as Pope Benedict XVI has taught us in his new encyclical, “Charity in Truth,” the sacredness of human life. As Bishop David Zubik has stated, our response to the G 20 summit will be based on welcoming, hospitality and, most of all, prayer.
Accordingly, the Church of Pittsburgh is responding to promptings by the Holy Spirit to take a position in the battle for the dignity of human life and to pray and fast for the September 24-25 G-20 Summit. The Catholic Men’s Fellowship of Pittsburgh (CMF) and the National Fellowship of Catholic Men (NFCM), with the support the Most Reverend David A. Zubik, Bishop of Pittsburgh, are leading a G-20 International Prayer and Fasting Campaign in the hopes of changing the hearts of world leaders on these crucial issues. It is time that we take up our battle stations on our knees before the Lord. We are collaborating closely with the Legion of Mary on this Campaign. The theme for this G-20 International Prayer and Fasting Campaign is from 2 Chronicles 7:14:
“. . . AND IF MY PEOPLE, UPON WHOM MY NAME HAS BEEN PRONOUNCED, HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND PRAY, AND SEEK MY PRESENCE AND TURN FROM THEIR EVIL WAYS, I WILL HEAR THEM FROM HEAVEN AND PARDON ALL THEIR SINS AND REVIVE THEIR LAND.”
This focused prayer and fasting initiative is not limited to the Church of Pittsburgh. We are asking Catholics around the world to support and/or participate in four separate devotions:
1) 40 day fasting calendar: We will facilitate a 40 day fasting calendar beginning August 15 (the Feast of the Assumption) and ending September 23. Simply pick at least one day to fast between those dates and email your name and date to info@cmfpitt.org . If you do not have email, mail your name and date to the Catholic Men’s Fellowship, PO Box 13235, Pittsburgh, PA 15243. We hope to have hundreds of Catholics worldwide fasting each day during those 40 days.
2) 40 hours of Eucharistic Adoration simultaneously with the G 20 meetings on September 24 and 25. Forty hours of prayer will be held at St. Paul Seminary’s O’Conner Hall, 2900 Noblestown Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15205. Bishop Zubik will open the 40 hours with Mass at 6:30 AM on Thursday September 24. Forty hours will close with Benediction at 10 PM on Friday September 25. We hope to schedule several adorers each hour. If you are in Pittsburgh and are able to adore for one hour please email your name, contact information, day and hour(s) to Ann Morrow: Kamorrow@consolidated.net . If you do not have email call Marion Salvatori at 412-885-2213.
3) Individual Holy Hours. For those of you who cannot be in Pittsburgh on September 24 and 25, consider making a Holy Hour during those 40 hours at a parish near you and let us know by emailing info@cmfpitt.org or by calling Marion at 412-885-2213. We hope to have adoration at a minimum in all 20 nations represented at the G-20.
4) Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy during the 40 hours: On the 24th and 25th at 2:45 PM. at O’Conner Hall, the Legion of Mary will lead the praying of the Rosary, and at 3 PM the praying of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

In addition, some of our brethren in other Christian denominations have also discerned with us the urgent need for prayer and fasting during this time. Accordingly, we understand that several Protestant congregations are planning on joining their prayers with ours in their own houses of worship and facilitating 40 days of fasting from August 15 through September 23. Additionally, there is an effort underway to coordinate 40 hours of around-the-clock prayer at these congregations as well.

Details will be posted at www.cmfpitt.org as they become available. Our hope is to have thousands of Christians worldwide praying and fasting that God will touch the hearts of world leaders on September 24-25. Our world leaders need our prayers at this time more than ever.
