Germany Warns Saudi Arabia Over Islamist Funding

BERLIN — German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel urged Saudi Arabia on Sunday to stop supporting religious radicals, amid growing concern among some lawmakers in Berlin about the funding of militant mosques by the world’s biggest oil exporter.

The unusual criticism of the Gulf state follows a report by Germany’s foreign intelligence agency which suggested that Saudi foreign policy was becoming more “impulsive”.

The German government rebuked the BND agency for making such suggestions about Saudi Arabia, an important business partner that is involved in international talks to find a political solution to the Syria crisis…

“We need Saudi Arabia to solve the regional conflicts,” Sigmar Gabriel, the head of the Social Democrats (SPD) who share power with conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel, told the mass-circulation newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

“But we must at the same time make clear that the time to look away is past. Wahhabi mosques are financed all over the world by Saudi Arabia. In Germany, many dangerous Islamists come from these communities,” he said.

Saudi Arabia follows the ultra-conservative Wahhabi form of Islam, and some outsiders see it as a cause of the international jihadist threat.

In a statement, the Saudi Arabia embassy in Berlin said the Kingdom was interested in countering the radicalization of young people and referred to a previous statement in which it denied wanting to build 200 mosques in Germany.

“Like Germany, we are part of the anti-Islamic State coalition and fighting side by side against terror,” it said.

The Saudis have cracked down on jihadists at home and cut militant finance streams, but some groups, including ISIS and al Qaeda, follow an extreme interpretation of the Salafi branch of Islam of which Wahhabism was the original strain.

Germany is worried about growing support for Salafism. The domestic intelligence agency says the number of Salafists has risen to 7,900, up from 5,500 just two years ago.

A lot of action on this issue in the past 7 days I’d say.

I saw another story that seemed to say so far, there is no proof the San Bernadino shooters were not radicalized in Saudi Arabia.

That news headline has been a long time in coming.

Saudi Arabians have spent billions bankrolling the dissemination of Islamist fundamentalism globally. That is something that has been tolerated in the name of business.

The time for that has long since passed. The deal with the devil that Saudi Arabia made with the religious police in 1979 needs to be reneged upon. Saudi Arabia needs to take a few steps toward the future and stop the reign of terror that these religious police have imposed upon domestic politics in that country.

we are in a heap of trouble folks!

Believe it or not, they aren’t the danger. It’s the Progressive Liberals and their political leaders who are. They get paid very well by the Saudi’s. Western leaders don’t care about their own people; just themselves. Gabriel and Seehofer are pretending to fall out with Merkel while the Macedonian border guards are fighting with “desperate refugees” who’ve threatened them physically.
Just look at the reaction to the stabbing in London on Saturday. Most important thing is to not give offence. The victims? Ignored.

They were more concerned with the offence given to Muslims. We can vote these cowards out but we need to do it now

Bout time someone called the Saudis to task. They’re already living what Daesh is trying to impose on the areas it’s invaded and would like to see implemented world wide. And many of their higher ups in government and society fund groups like Daesh. Yet they get a free pass because they’re a big oil exporter.

Clinton Foundation Received Millions from Saudis, Qatar, Iran

This is so. With politicians, between receiving monies from Saudi Arabia to the same-sex marriage lobby, to Israel, NRA, Planned Parenthood and so on, this is in whose interests they often act at least in the USA. As much as some disagree with Trump, he’s not bought and paid for. I understand they say Hollywood types turned up the heat to get same-sex marriage passed leaving the rest of the US in the cold.

The Saudi royal family will do whatever they need to minimize the threat of an overthrow in their own country. Like you said, they made a deal with the devil to allow the fundamental extremists to propagate their form of Islam in order to direct their attention outside of the country instead of focusing on internals. It will probably still be a matter of time before the fall. I’m sure that the family has plenty of European real estate and billions squirreled away for that time.

I read once, can’t say if it is true or not, that the oil fields in Saudi Arabia are rigged with dirty bombs that will be detonated in the event of an overthrow of the government. I wouldn’t be surprised one bit.

Same-sex marriage initiatives failed on every ballot that they were on, including in California. It was federal courts, and finally, the supreme court with an utterly ridiculous ruling claiming that “liberty means pursuing your own individuality” - find that in a book on jurisprudence - that made it legal.

Its been 40 years since Roe v Wade and it is still being battled. If it were so easy for wealthy groups to just “turn up the heat” to get their agendas passed, there would not be the conflict that exists in this country today.
