Unbelievable! He blames the thirteen-year-old girl.

[FONT=Arial]Author Gore Vidal says he refuses to feel any sympathy for Roman Polanski’s rape victim, whom he dubs a “hooker.”
In an interview with The Atlantic, the controversial 83-year-old author of such books as “Myra Breckinridge” and “1876” says of the director’s sex scandal, “I really don’t give a [expletive]. Look am I going to sit and weep every time a young hooker feels as though she’s being taken advantage of?”
The young woman to whom he is referring is Samantha Geimer, who was a 13-year-old aspiring model in 1977 when she was drugged and raped by Polanski.
Vidal went on to say that the media pushed an inaccurate image of Geimer, painting her as an innocent victim as opposed to what he believes to be her true identity.

“I was in the middle of all that,” he says of the scandal. “Back then, we all were. Everybody knew everybody else. There was a totally different story at the time that doesn’t resemble anything that we’re now being told.”
Worse, Vidal claims that it is the media’s vehement “anti-Semitic and anti-fag thing” that led to the persecution of Polanski, who is Jewish and was born in Poland.
“The media can’t get anything straight … The idea that this girl was in her communion dress, a little angel all in white, being raped by this awful Jew, ‘Polacko’ – that’s what people were calling him – well, the story is totally different now from what it was then … Anti-Semitism got poor Polanski.”
Polanski, now 76, was arrested in Switzerland last month and is pending extradition. He has been living in France since he fled the U.S. in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with an underage girl.
The director of such classic films as “Chinatown” and “Rosemary’s Baby” has asked a U.S. appeals court in California to overturn a judges’ refusal to throw out his case. He claims misconduct by the now-deceased judge who had arranged a plea bargain and then reneged on it.
Just three days ago, Geimer, now 46, asked the court to drop all charges against the director, claiming that the unwanted publicity has harmed her health, work and family.

The man is a nutcase.

Quote from his interview with Joy Behar.

“But I couldn’t jump into the screen fast enough to kill him (George Bush) off. That’s one murder that I missed not committing.” Host Joy Behar didn’t oppose his death wish.

Joy Behar responded first by chuckling and then say, “Well, it’s too late anyway.”

I know we are not supposed to call anyone a “nutcase”, but that is the kindest word I could think of.

You’re just telling the truth. How can anyone in their right mind blame a young girl like that?

Of course that’s Hollywood for you they’re in their own little elitist world.

Does Mr. Vidal think it’s less morally wrong for an adult man to frequent a child prostiute? A 13 year old cannot consent! What a warped view.

This is a disgusting view and there are so many hollywood elitists who are sympathetic with polanski. whether she was a hooker or not - she was still 13.
i don’t feel sorry for polanski.
i don’t think much of gore vidal either. and joy behar-well, that is another hollywood elitist who i think is overrated.

So we’re back to the old distasteful and rather sick premise that one cannot rape a prostitute?

The wacky nonsense Vidal introduces out of left field about the victim of the rapist not been dressed in a communion dress etc. tells us something about him as well. He waffles on about anti-semitic feeling (which btw is wrong) but doesn’t realise his own imagery is insulting to Christians.

Polanski is a self confessed rapist, only the fact that the victim herself feels this prosecution is opening a dark period in her life all over again would cause me to pause. Even then you have to consider the public interest which is not served by letting up on Polanski. All sorts of ridiculous ploys have been advanced on his behalf, such as resorting to invoking his wife Sharon Tate’s murder or the death of family members under the Nazi and how these mean he must be treated with kid gloves. Nope, he is a rapist - let him go to jail, he is a child rapist further - let him go to jail. The only consideration he should be entitled to is to be kept safer from unprovoked attacks by other members of the prison population and to be given health care etc.

Vidal claims that it is the media’s vehement “anti-Semitic and anti-fag thing” that led to the persecution of Polanski, who is Jewish and was born in Poland.

 :hmmm:I’m not getting how being “anti-fag” would cast aspersions on someone “born in Poland.” :ehh:

Quite hilarious if Gore has ever travelled in Eastern Europe where been gay is still seen in many places with far less tolerance than it would be in western Europe or the US. This area of London has about 10 per cent Poles living here and many of them find the idea of gay pride parades etc. repulsive.

Gore is projecting his own obssession with sexual politics onto everything - he is notorious for slagging of Judaism and Christianity for been sexauly repressive. When William F. Buckley died this was Vidal’s comment:-

… hell is bound to be a livelier place, as he joins forever those whom he served in life, applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred.[56]

Now Mr. Buckley is not on the same political page as me as I am a socialist by inclination in most areas politically but this was surely showing up how weak Vidal’s commitment to really allowing people to express differing viewpoints - especially as I know enough about US politics to know Buckley was a practising Catholic.

Ah, yes. The old blame the rape victim approach.

I wonder if the “Your honor, she was wearing a red dress. She was obviously asking for it” defense will be making a comeback soon too.

It’s most unChristian but I wonder if ‘I’m sorry I gave Mr. Vidal a thump in the head but defending child rapists tends to rile me up’ defence might be acceptable also  Note to everyone, this is meant tongue in cheek but Vidal has irked me with this remark - I have an extreme distaste for rape as a crime in any case, I cannot stand to watch a rape sequence in a movie. Throw as much gore as you want all over the screen and I’ll merrily laugh at it but rape sequences or similar churn my stomach for some reason so I’m probably over-sensitive on the topic.

On many issues politically or in other areas I would be at odds with Americans here but on this issue I firmly support those here who want no kowtowing to Polanski’s perceived artistic statues and want him to go to jail for his crime.
