Graduating students defy ACLU

good for them.

Members of the graduating class of 2009 at Florida’s Pace High School have expressed their objections to ACLU restrictions on statements of religious faith at their school by rising up en masse at their ceremony and reciting the Lord’s Prayer.

Nearly 400 graduating seniors at Pace, a Santa Rosa County school, stood up at their graduation, according to Mathew Staver, president of Liberty Counsel.

The ACLU had sued the school six months earlier and as part of the discussions over that dispute, the school’s separate counsel had agreed to a consent decree that “essentially bans all Santa Rose County School District employees from engaging in prayer or religious activities,” Liberty Counsel’s report said.

The ACLU had alleged that during a dinner event at the school, Lay had asked the athletic director to bless the meal. In a second incident, the ACLU claimed Winkler’s husband, who is not a school board employee, offered a prayer at an awards ceremony.

As preparations were being made for the 2009 graduation, the ACLU demanded the school censor students from offering prayers or saying anything religious. As a result, two student leaders traditionally allowed by the school to address their graduation were banned from doing so.

Staver said class members, furious with the ACLU for hijacking their free speech rights, assembled the plan on their own. As soon as Lay asked everyone to be seated for the ceremony, the graduating seniors remained standing and recited the Lord’s Prayer.

the aclu was founded as a communist plot to overthrow this country and should be disbanded and labeled as the domestic terror group it is. good for these srudents. down with the aclu and up with Real freedom.

We need to see more of this!

Let the backlash begin! :thumbsup:

This won’t stand, it gets in the way of the establishment of the official state religion of atheism.

We had a similar problem when my nephew graduated High School in 2001 , The ACLU tried the same threat , so the students got together and asked the local Missouri Synod Lutheran Church if they could use their parish hall for graduation, The Pastor and his church council knew their reasons and what the ACLU had said to them if they would have the graduation on school property, and his reply was , Yes you may have it here , to make a long story short, the graduation was held off school property at a church parish hall and prayer was offered by the students and selected faculty members that the graduates had asked to honor their special day . The Aclu found out and was powerless to do anything about it. Perhaps we should add the ACLU to the PATRIOT ACT terrorist act if that is possible

Warms my little heart when young adults stand up for liberty and justice on their own. (snif) they grow up so fast! :aok:

Good for them. They have more backbone than their parents or the faculty…

:rotfl::rotfl:

Well, Aggie, I wouldn’t go that far myself as I have not researched it that far, but in my opinion the ACLU is a clear and present danger to our personal liberties and freedom of speech than Communism ever was.

Any word if the ACLU is going to sue the students?

Looks like Dear Leader has found his first 400 “summer volunteer duty” conscripts.

Actually, no. It was founded to protect civil liberties and has done so on a non-partisan basis since the thirties. It has represented Klan members as to free speech issues and represented a white man charged with a felony for marrying a black woman, changing US law forever. So many conservatives (like Clarence Thomas) should thank the ACLU.

Disband the ACLU? I think the constitution says something about freedom of association – its a civil liberty.

‘The problem with freedom is that once you give it to one group, the whole world wants to be free.’ – Gil Scott-Heron

Great story! This lifted my spirits.

I do must take issue with the ACLU’s manner of taking up issues. STRONG bias against christianity, IMO

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

We need this kind of thing to happen massively!! We need a backlash like the country has never seen!! I highly doubt that they would be able to throw all of us in jail.:wink:

The founder of the American Civil Liberties Union was a card-carrying communist whose goal was to undermine the Judeo-Christian foundations of America, according to author David Kupelian.

One of the great myths of the 20th – and now 21st – century is the belief that the American Civil Liberties Union was an organization that had a noble beginning, but somehow strayed off course.

That myth is untrue. The ACLU set a course to destroy America – her freedom and her values – right from the start.

From its very beginning, the ACLU had strong socialist and communist ties. As early as 1931, the U.S. Congress was alarmed by the ACLU’s devotion to communism.

The ACLU is “engaged in trying to eliminate every vestige of Judeo-Christian expression in public places in America,”
The goals of the ACLU were clear from the group’s founding, as indicated by the writings of its founder, Roger Baldwin: “I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the propertied class… Communism is the goal.”

So do I. I think some of their recent positions have been just weird. Now we have McCarthyite tactics going on about the founding of the organization and commies (horrors!).

We should ask Clarence Thomas about the ACLU.

You are absolutely correct. The ACLU often takes cases defending the religious freedom of Christians. Funny, how those right wing pundits manage to avoid every mentioning those facts. Here’s a website with links to details of many of the most recent cases. One I remember because it’s in Southern California where I live - the ALCU defended the rights of a church based group feeding the homeless in a park. A few years ago there was a case in a state like Montana or one of the Dakotas, a state with a small Catholic population. The case involved a Catholic man who had been ordered into rehab for substance abuse. The man was put in a rehab program run by a demonination that wasn’t very sensitive to his Catholic beliefs. The ACLU sued and won on his behalf.

That’s the thing about rights, so many people want them for themselves and those they agree with, but sometimes aren’t real concerned about the rights of the folks they disagree with. The ACLU actually works to see that everyone’s rights are protected, even those they disagree with (such as the Klan).

yeah that lifesitenews they’re just out to get people.

Thank them !!! Ya right. NEVER. They don’t defend Christianity… they are trying to eliminate it. They should be disbanded.

The pastor who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance was a socialist. Lucille Ball’s grandfather was a socialist. The Reuthers who founded the UAW were democratic socialists. Woody Guthrie wrote: “This Land Was Made For You and Me”. Do you know his politics? What do those factoids have to do with anything now? Which brings us to the ACLU …
