Back in the day, it wasn’t standard to receive communion daily or sometimes even weekly or monthly. The rules were strict by today’s standards.
As far as I know, the Oriental, Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic churches today continue to have stricter canonical requirements for reception. The degrees of severity vary.
I’m not sure how I feel about it either. No water after midnight seems pretty hardcore. I’d put a reoccurring alert on my phone to camel it up on a bucket of water before going to bed. Eating a high-sodium meal like Pizza Hutt could really backfire in the morning.
The more years I spend Catholic, the more I lean towards modernity.
