why did Jesus tell the parable in John and Matthew about having to eat his flesh and drink his blood to enter into the new covenant
and then not explain it and even let some followers walk away. I am confused even more so b/c my sweet wife does not understand. Help. Every other parable He explained

St. Paul in one of his letters says we should receive communion properly, if not - we commit a sin. Catholic Church’s teaching is clear in this issue, we need to receive it.

The reason He did not explain is because there simply was nothing to HAVE to explain. Jewish tradition of passover held that people had to consume the flesh of their sacrificial lamb. Jesus, here, was foreshadowing His death, resurrection, AND the institution of the Holy Communion in the Last Supper wherein we are given TRUE transubstantiation and verily we DO eat of the body of the Lamb of God.

The “Bread of Life Discourse” in John 6 did not have to be explained because it’s not a parable. Christ told his followers quite literally, “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you.”

Clearly, those who heard this wondered how this could be possible without being absolutely reprehensible: “how can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Some of his disciples left him over that.

The apostles, however, did not leave but had faith in him: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” They believed what he had said simply because he said it–without knowing at that time how it could be possible.

Later on, at the Last Supper, Christ showed them how they could eat his flesh and drink his blood and gave them the power and the command to perpetuate this sacrament until his return in glory.

Scott Hahn has a really good explanation here: The Fourth Cup

And there are a variety of good explanations from different angles on the thread entitled “Why did he let them walk away”: here or here.
