Help - Genesis 1:1-2:4a What does the a mean?

Need help. When I need to read Genesis 1:1-2:4a. What does 2:4a mean??

What does the letter a, indicate?

I have also seen the letter b used, and can find no reference as to what is means when the letters are used.

Can anyone help explain this lettering system.???

Thank you soooooooo much.

a and b are usually part of the verse: Genesis 1: 2-4a would mean that if you were to read it for say mass, you would read Genesis, chapter one, verse 2 through the first sentence of verse 4. So, “the earth was a formless wasteland” through “God saw how good the light was.” Period. You don’t read the 4b which would be “God then separated the light from the darkness.”

I am almost 100% sure this is the way it is but I’m open to correction if I am mistaken.

Does make sense. Thank you for your input.
