Historically, what was the Church's position on Slavery?

Historically, what has been the Catholic Church’s stance on any type of slavery? If the Church supported it…why?
I ask this because I’ve been caught off guard by a person who says the Catholic Church supported slavery in the past and that the church is only against it now to make up for their mistakes in the past.
