Holy War in China?

Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (a/k/a Chinese Turkestan or just “Xinjiang”) has had a long and bloody history of religious violence. The really sad part is that some Uyghurs turn to violence in the name of Islam because they have no other recourse to challenge the People’s Republic of China or vent their frustrations.

Worse, Xinjiang shares a border with Afghanistan.

I’m not sure there is much to choose between an Islamic Uighur republic and the Chinese state. I don’t much doubt China is repressive there, but it’s repressive everywhere it rules, as Tibetans and Inner Mongolians would readily testify. As they would also testify, China does not pussyfoot around with rebellion. Uighur revolt will not result in anything but a lot of Uighurs in jail or in their graves.
