How do I answer this Intercession of Saints Objection?

Recently I was attempting to explain the Intercession of Saints to a non-denominational Christian.

Her response was that there are none who have died who are currently aware. In her mind they are asleep and waiting for the Final Judgment so they cannot hear us, even if we do try to pray to them.

She used the verses that speak of Lazarus and the little girl whom Jesus resurrected. Apparently in those verses he says; “Rise from your sleep…” So she is now convinced this is what happens when one dies - one goes to sleep until the resurrection.

How on earth do I refute this idea?
