How do I understand the ambiguity over the word "cousin"?

Hello! I’m a Protestant interested in becoming catholic and learning as much as I can. How is it that Catholics are quick to explain the “Jesus had biological brothers” objection to Mary’s perpetual virginity by saying the Aramaic word for brother could mean relative or cousin while maintaining that Elizabeth was explicitly Mary’s cousin (see Luke 1:37)? Thank you!
