How Do They Choose the Pope?

For your kids

This is great for any age, and especially for people with non-Catholic friends. Nice and easy to follow. :o

Eeny, Meeny, Miney*** – POPE***! :highprayer: :clapping:

I could be wrong.

Ha ha, I was kinda hoping this was a question so I could post that video. It popped up in my youtube feed today.

Actually, that isn’t too far from how the pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church (with 18 million members, mainly in Egypt) is selected.

Nominations are taken, who are then vetted by a committee. Select persons (a thousand or so) are designated as electors, who then vote. The names of the top three vote-getters are written on slips of paper. The slips are dropped into a container, placed on the altar, and a child reaches in and draws the name of the new pope.

The current leader of the Coptic Orthodox Church is Pope Theodoros II.

Their selection of pope is believed to be guided by the Holy Spirit, much as ours is.
