How do we explain the suffering of innocent children?

I am 87 years old and have been a active catholic all my life. For the past three months or so I have been very worried about the suffering of innocent small children. I have searched the internet time and time again and cannot find an acceptable answer. In the past I always accepted that ‘We cannot know God’s ways and must have faith enough that God knows best’. Is this the only answer?

I hope you can shed some more light on this problem.
