How do we know when something the pope says is an infallible statement?

I just wanted to know how do we know when something the pope says is an infallible statement? I was asked this by a protestant friend and he accompanied it with some examples of quotes from Popes that seem to contradict the Bible. Some of these quotes i later found out were taken way out of context i later discovered after some research but i wasn’t sure how to answer the original question about how to know if the Pope’s statements are infallible or not.

Thanks
