We had been using cable until we recently moved, and I decided not to renew our subscription. I only subscribed for internet service which is about $40 a month. I bought a good router that has streaming HD wireless.
I installed a corner shelf that I got from Lowes and mounted the router up in a corner of a room above my computer so that it's well above my head but with about 6" of room between it and the ceiling (I don't like the router being right in front of me because I don't know if the strong signal that comes out is good to be so close to my head). So now my ethernet cords go through the router.
My laptop has an output for HD, so I connected it to the TV with that cord. With that wireless laptop set up I can get streaming internet on my TV. Whatever is on my laptop screen can be seen on the TV screen with max HD resolution (when I have the settings for "projector" only).
In addition, I bought some cheap $10 RCA rabbit ears from WalMart, and now I can get local channels for free. Some of them are in really good quality HD. The only thing is that sometimes the reception goes out and back in. But this happens less on our top floor. I'm supplementing that with our DVD collection. We could do things like Netflix and Hulu, but right now I'd rather see if I can get by without those with whatever streaming video can be viewed for free on the internet. Plus, I have no interest in most of the garbage that comes out today.
