Why did Jesus come to earth? What was His purpose?
Jesus says, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
"In Him was life; and the life was the Light of men." John 1:4
God the Father sent Jesus to the earth so that people could have life and have it to the full! It is a beautiful gift for us all.
This life that Jesus brings is our salvation. It is passing from spiritual death to spiritual life. It is passing from bondage in sin to bondage in Love. It is becoming in union with God in action and in motive. It is becoming one's true self, as a vessel of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus came to the Jews, the people who's national religion was to serve the true God. They already had God. They already had His commandments. They already followed His voice. (That was well established in the Jewish community)
Why did Jesus then have to come to give them life if they already had these things?
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." Luke 10 25:28
Thus Jesus tells the man what to do to live. This law they already had so why would they need Jesus? They already had this law and they already had God. Could they not just do this and live? Why have Jesus?
1 John 5 :12 tells us "He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life."
Thus even though they had God (which is Love) and they had God's laws in their heart through His voice and through scripture they still did not have life. (I am referring to Jews at the time that really did follow God in their hearts. I am not referring to the ones that did not love God in their hearts with this above sentence.)
What were they lacking? Why did Jesus have to come to give them and us life when they already had these things?
The reason is they did not have God (Love) in the physical realm. Men of that time who served God had God in their hearts but did not have Him in the physical realm. Thus they could serve God with their motives but they could not serve God (Love) in their actions. Even if their motives were pure they were still in bondage to sin as they had no God (Love) in the physical realm to serve.
Jesus changes that! Jesus brings something new. He brings God (Love) into the physical realm by entering our world for our salvation! What a gift! What an incredible gift!
Now Jews and all mankind can serve God (Love) in both motive and in physical action. Now mankind can do things straight for God and to God. With doing things to Jesus mankind is not locked in sin as they were for ages. The truth will make you free!!!
Jesus is God. As Mother Teresa says, "He is the Love to be loved and the Love to be served."
Now everyone can be free from sin. Now everyone can have life as now Love has come into our physical world as the Man of Jesus Christ.
We can serve Him in our work and serve Him in everyone we meet.
As Pope John Paul said that Jesus’ “self-oblation on the Cross becomes the source of new life for all people” (No. 33). And, the pope said, “Jesus has a unique relationship with every person, which enables us to see in every human face the face of Christ”
With Jesus we have the Light in our physical world so that we can do what is true. We can do things for the Almighty that made heaven and earth. We can now serve the Almighty in every person we meet.
As Dorothy Day says, "That is how we lose our life for Christ: doing ordinary acts with love, attention, respect, and hope; seeing Christ in everyone and serving Christ in all our little acts."
Thus Jesus came to bring the world Life! This is our salvation! Without Jesus we do not have God (Love) in our physical realm to serve. Jesus came so that we could serve Him and thus walk in the Light and be free from sin.
What a beautiful gift. How wonderful it is for each of us to have our part in His plan. Let us not lose this beautiful gift
