I need help.

I need help. I am a teen struggling with masturbation. But I also have a mental illness that may be related to stress. I have spells of surealness, I get disoriented and cannot function right. My grades are slipping and I am becoming more and more stressed. Would it still be a mortal sin if I masturbated, not enough to fall into a habit, but just enough to try to cure me. I hope somebody can help me. I do not want to loose my mind to stress, but I don’t want to go to hell. I know that a Saint, I think Saint Thomas or something said that a situation like this would not be a mortal sin. Help.

Have you talked to your Parish Priest about this? If you have, what has he said?

I’ve never known anyone who masturbated without it “becoming a habit”. I just don’t think it’s possible. I’ve also never known someone who was helped by doing something to themselves that they knew to be sinful.

Try prayer instead, and a lot of it. There are prayers that are calming and that will help reduce your stress if you use them. Ask you parish Priest about them - Start out with the Jesus’ Prayer:

“Lord Jesus Christ,
Son of the Living God,
Have mercy on me,
A Sinner…”

I also didn’t hear you say that you’re a frequent recipient of the Eucharist - Or of the Sacraments of Reconciliation or of Healing. The Pope gets the Eucharist DAILY and the other two WEEKLY!

On the Topic of Healing, are you seeing a counsellor, psychologist of other therapist on a regular ongoing basis? If so, are you seeing one who understands every symptom you’ve listed above?

If your aren’t seeing a therapist, have you talked to your parents about this so they can understand that you just might need some help?

I Hope you get better.

In Christ, Michael

Engaging in an intrinsically evil act (self-abuse/masturbation) is never a licit “prescription” to “cure” you. Do any adults (parents, priest, teachers, counselors) know of how you are feeling? If not, then I would start with your parents or priest, or at least some trusted adult in your life. It is of utmost importance that you not isolate to yourself with your struggles.Traditional Ang gave you some sound advice that I would begin doing for yourself. I’ll pray for you. God bless.

I struggle with that sin often myself. I wouldn’t think it would have anything to do with your illness (contribute to it or cure it), but just a need to release the sexual tension that occurs.

I find that praying the rosary really helps with this sin, as well as managing the day to day stressors of life. I find that it all goes over much easier. Try it.

Remember, God’s healing grace is stronger than any sin you or I could ever commit.

Pray…and keep on keeping on!

God Bless You!

No, it is always morally evil, and no, it will not cure (or cause) mental illness. For you spiritual problem the solution is frequent confession and communion. for your mental disturbances, the solution is counselling, medication if prescribed and following the recommendations of you therapist. Ask your folks also so see you get a complete physical exam to rule out organic causes for the disturbances you are experiencing, which could be the result of medical problems.

JPrez182 can I ask why you felt it necessary to put a link to the work sex in your post? I do not know what is behind the link but I can see from looking at the link address that it leads to a search engine. It certainly better not lead anyone struggling with internet porn or any other form of impurity astray.

If it does well then you are responsible for their downfall.

Please consider removing it if it is offensive.

Fergal,

My Internet does that automatically, and I don’t know how or why. It does that with everything. Some of the words in your post are highlighted as links as well. Trust me, It wasn’t intentional.

Masterbation never cured anything. If you have a mental problem , masterbation may make the mental problem worse!

I see you need to go to Confession and tell the truth, all of it…then listen to the priest. Ask the confessor to talk to a priest.

Does your mom & dad know you are having mental problems? It is best to get professional help (psychaitrist) now and not some day when you are found lying on the floor somewhere. I speak from experience.

I’ll go along with everyone who says you need to go see a doctor for your physical symptoms. Dizziness and disorientation are not normal. I cannot see any way that masturbation would help those problems.

Hey

Do you have panic disorder? I had panic disorder and used to suffer from spells of derealization/depersonalization…

Anyway, I also would get very stressed out and would masturbate to relieve stress. I thought that if I stopped masturbating I would have severe stress etc.

Anyway, the exact opposite happened. I stopped masturbating and gained greater control over lustful thoughts and I am much, much less stressed right now.

Sounds like you’re having a real tough time.

Years ago, I clawed my way out of my masturbation problem by relentless praying.

The answer prayer finally took me to was simple.

Don’t look.

Looking must precede masturbation.

Don’t look.

I will say a pray for you, young friend.

Hi Chicken Man,

If your occasion of masterbation is because of a seemingly overwhelming sexual urge, and
NOT because of some “out of the blue,” non-sexually stimulated choice to use it as a form
of self medication, then perhaps a change in your diet might help.

Wishing you inner peace,
