Ice sheet melt threat reassessed

Even the mainstream media is picking this up:

Ice sheet melt threat reassessed

The collapse of a major polar ice sheet will not raise global sea levels as much as previous projections suggest, a team of scientists has calculated.

Writing in Science, the researchers said that the demise of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) would result in a sea level rise of 3.3m (10 ft).

Previous estimates had forecast a rise in the region of five to six metres.

Something is just plain wrong about the idea that a floating ice sheet melting would have ANY effect on water levels. When ice floats, it displaces the exact same amount of water as when it melts!

Try it at home folks. Fill a glass 2/3 full of water and add 4 ice cubes totally floating. Mark the glass with the water elevation. Check again when the melting is done. Same mark.

So how does the melting of floating sea ice increase sea levels???

It does, if the public’s belief in it can generate millions of dollars for a few clever people.

I think the west antartica ice sheet is on land.

Yes, the West Antartica ice sheet is on land

There are volcanoes there and geothermal heat could be contributing to the thinning of glaciers. And last year, scientists did report an active volcano in West Antarctica.

The sea ice around Antartica is actually growing.

i think the problem was they did a straight volume conversion, ignoring the reason ice floats-that it expands at freezing instead of continuing to contract like most other things.

1 liter of ice wont fill a 1 liter jug after it has melted.
