India to build $30b oil refinery

**India’s biggest oil refinery that state-run Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) and Engineers India (EIL) plan to set up on the west coast will cost $30 billion or Rs2 trillion, a senior official said.

“The 60 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) refinery and a mega petrochemical complex will be set up in two phases.**

Hopefully, environmental standards for building this kind of structure will be met.

One problem with refineries being built in first world countries becoming politically nonviable is that the third world does not have sufficient environmental standards for projects such as these. NIMBY comes at a cost for the global environment as a whole.
