Intruder shot, killed at Killeen residence
A man allegedly shot and killed another man breaking into his house in the 4800 block of Chad Drive in Killeen at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The man had kicked in the door to the home. When the homeowner shot him, he died almost immediately, Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Carroll Smith said.
The man called police and told them he had shot an intruder. Police arrived to find a black man lying on the porch by the back door. Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin pronounced the man dead at 12:56 p.m.
The dead man has not been identified. His name will be withheld until authorities have notified his next of kin, according to a KPD news release. Police are still investigating the shooting.
In certain states, including Texas, the Castle Doctrine gives a person the legal right to use deadly force to defend one's home and its occupants from intrusion or attack. It is not yet clear if the homeowner in this case was protected under this law.
