Is crossdressing a sin?

Joan of Arc dressed in men’s clothes and was burned at the stake for it. More dubious saint’s lives tell of Anastasia, Eugenia, Pelagia living as hermits or even monks. There’s even story of Theodora and Didymus who changed clothes. When does the end – saving one’s virginity or life – justify the (intentionally or unintentionally) deceptive means?
