Is it OK to use "psychics" in wartime?

#1

I think it would be ok to listen to the psychics, check it out thoroughly, and proceed as neccessary. I do think it is wrong to get personal “readings”, but I see this as different somehow. I’m all for peace!!!

#2

what on earth to psychics have to do with peace? what possible use could consultation with psychics have to do with securing peace, or assuring the safety of loved ones involved in the fighting? If you put your trust in persons and creatures, rather than God, during wartime or any other crisis, you are denying God and elevating creatures to divine status. That is blasphemy and an offense against the first commandment.

I guess I see it more than if/when my husband is over there, and someone can point out the snipers before they get him, we’re saving lives (both the soldier’s and possibly the sniper’s).

If a psychic could provide information supernaturally, even helpful information, it would ultimately be for an evil intent. Satan comes as an angel of light. I do believe that some mediums and psychics are "legitimate’ in that they do truly hear voices and get supernatural information, but who/what are they hearing from? If not God or in accordance with God’s will, then they are hearing from an evil spirit.

As the Crocodile Hunter would say, "Daaynger, daaynger, daaynger.

psychics come in two flavors: those who are charlatans who have developed a schtick to make money, and those who genuinely have information that can only be obtained supernaturally. Since that supernatural knowledge cannot come from God, it comes from the devil. Either way, are these people we want to give government money and authority to? Better get some dogs who genuinely do have the ability to sniff out snipers, much better and more effective use of military resources.

It is never ok to use psychics…it is against God’s law.

We must no forget that Hitler, Himmler et al put their trust in psychics. Even if Germany contrabanded all psychic activity, they allowed THEMSELVES the perceived luxury. Typical of tyrants…and demented.

Psychics have been used by the CIA successfully. The CIA ‘Remote Viewer’ program was shut down by a new administrator who thought the concept of ESP to be a hoax, so he ignored the positive results and halted funding.

So any Remote Viewer program all depends on the attitude of the manager in charge at the moment.

I was always curious as to the Vatican’s attitude toward ESP?

Personally I believe ESP is part of the evolution of our cognitive abilities - the evolution of the mind, and not just the body.

Since the Catholic Church has no problem with evolution, it is my big fat guess that the Church won’t be bothered with the concept of ESP? The Old Testament is filled with prophets who accurately fortold the coming of the Messiah, so it seems reasonable to me that there still might be people on this planet with the gift.

ESP is extra-sensory perception, not the same thing at all as being psychic. ESP is a natural phenomenon the result of certain persons have exceedingly well developed neurological systems of sense perception and information gathering and interpreting. Psychic is someone who uses or claims to use supernatural means to gain knowledge that cannot be known by natural means.

It seems to me that the best way to preserve your husband’s life from Iraqi sniper attacks is for him not to go there.

After all, God did not create us so that we could kill each other. Nor were we created to worship the state.

"Woe to the rebellious children," says the LORD,
 "who carry out a plan, but not mine;
and who make a league, but not of my spirit,
that they may add sin to sin;"

Have you listened to Major Ed Dames on Coast to Coast? He gets very few of his predictions right. He was even wrong about Chandra Levy.

The Old Testament admonishes that a true prophet will be right 100% of the time. Anything else comes from the devil.

Sylvia Brown is notoriously wrong. She predicts the demise of the Pope every year. She is wrong every year.

i have the chance to go see sylvia in a few weeks as a friend of mine has asked me to go with her to a live show where brown will be appearing. I know that the dark gifts of psychic ability are from the devil and so if she does indeed have these dark gifts, they are from the father of lies and can’t be trusted for accuracy or content… I’m actually planning on going and saying (interiorly) the lay prayers of exorcism for her while i’m there and a consecration of her and her believers to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is a great chance to pray for her and those who follow the lies of the new age in person. I’m tired of the lies of the new age gaining a foothold in the world. paganism and secularism are great tools of the devil, more people need to spiritually combat them with prayers, self-denial and fasting so that God may enter the lives of those living in this world… the kingdom of the prince of hell.

Hi epower,

As was stated in an above post, a lot of people who claim psychic abilities are charlatans and have a scam to make money. All you have to do is speak in banal generalities and just by the law of averages, one of your predictions will come true.

BUT, there are documented instances of certain individuals who are very accurate indeed. The police use psychics as well as intelligence agencies.

So of course you have your phonies, but then you have the real McCoys.

There’s a book called Looking for the Other Side in which the author starts out skeptical and ends up a believer, because again and again the psychics tested by her were able to access impossible-to-know information.

In other words, the occult is real.

But stay away from it anyway.

I am convinced, after years and years of review, that the occult always acquires such unknowable information from demons.

I think that accessing the occult is the ultimate lack of trust in God, and your reward for accessing the un-Godly other side will be an unwelcome relationship with a being you won’t want near you.

It is my understanding that putting our trust in psychics is wrong because we are not meant to know the future.

Someone above pointed out (Puzzleannie?) that ESP is not being psychic, it is a natural evolution. I think the first thing people need to do is distinguish between “forbidden” psychics and people with a gift.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t believe it would be wrong to use a gift that is in the “here and now” …like locating a missing child etc. It is not telling the future or selling “fortunes”, it is helping.

I would think this through. Do you have a spiritual director? Or a priest that you trust? It is ok to pray for her and her victims but to say exorcism prayers interiorly for her is a delicate issue. The Church has advised that there were not to be any imprecatory prayers in these kind of situations.

But what about NOT getting readings regarding the future… just finding out questions about now - where people are hiding, where are there weapons being made, etc?? Couldn’t we use them more as “tips” than a demonic prophecy?

Sorry, AirForceMama…the answer is no. What I do when I need to know something from God, I ask Him. Many times I get the answer in my dreams, through the Bible or through others.

I can’t imagine your anxiety. I read a book on St Therese and many soldiers prayed to her during the World Wars and their prayers were answered. I think she may be the patron saint of soldiers…I am not sure. Novenas were said to her to save one’s loved one in war. There are many written witnesses in that book that confirm her intercession…

I hope this helps,

Is your answer based on personal opinion or fact? If it is fact, could you please tell me how to find out for myself…bible quotes, Church documents etc?

Now, I have a question. Let’s say you have a friend or loved one who has a relative in Iraq. let’s say they are MIA.

Now, you pray for this person and their missing loved one…let’s say God tells you in a dream (as per your post) where to find this soldier . If you tell your friend what God told you, how are you any different than another person who has the means to obtain such info from God?

From my limited knowledge of scripture, I believe that “psychics” are forbidden because we seek knowledge from them about the future. We are not supposed to know the future. And many people who consult psychics treat it as a religion (New Age movement) instead of as a supplement to Christianity.

Like I said before, there are people who get “powers” from evil sources and usually expoit them for fame or fortune. Then there are what I believe to be “gifted” people. ESP would fall into this category.

The original poster wants to know Church based fact on this issue… so what is it? Anyone? Maybe it should be asked in the AAA Forum?

Dear AirForceMama
Please see your handy copy of the CCC starting with #2084…It will cover all of that. If we make this exception, how long will it be before they begin conjuring demons like the crazy movies like “Hellboy” and stuff like that? No…I prefer the St. Michael Prayer. He’s the patron saint of soldiers…give me his angelic help any time over some psuedo psychic.
Pax vobiscum,

Just to clarify. I think we’re not talking of those “psychics” who contact the dead or predict the future or something like that. I think the original poster is referring to people with special abilities who can perceive beyond the normal 5 senses (e.g. ESP), like determining the position of a sniper. I would seem plausible that these people may actually have the ability to use more of their brains than the average human. Who knows? We use only a fraction of our brains. It’s quite possible that our brains may have a built-in radio/antenna system that can communicate with other brains, except we’ve generally not figured out how to use it.

In any case, I think the psychics here are more in the realm of science rather than the supernatural.
