Is the "ablution cup" still required?

#1

Our new pastor recently removed the ablution cup from its location next to the Tabernacle, saying that it was no longer required or necessary.

I searched and searched, but couldn’t find any liturgical documents requiring - or even mentioning - the use of an ablution cup for Ministers of Holy Communion after they have handled the Sacred Species.

Is there any requirement for an ablution cup in current legislation? In past legislation?

Many of the Extraordinary Ministers are upset about this change, and would still like to cleanse their fingers after touching the Hosts to remove small fragments.

Sincerely,

Mike M.

Dear Mike,

No, the ablution container is not required. Most parishes I am aware of have not used such items for several years. However, there is no law that says that they cannot be used.
