Is the Golden Rule situational ethics?

“Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets” --Mt 7.12 (NAB)

Is Jesus’s “Golden Rule” an example of sitational ethics? How can this be if our Church teaches Absolute values? Thank you.

Dear J,

There is nothing situational about the basic appetite for the good that all human beings are born with. Everyone desires to be treated well. It’s how God designed us. So Jesus tells us to treat each other well—just as we want to be treated.
