Is the showing of video in place of the homily ok?

I have a question regarding Mass. Recently our Pastor played a video during what would have been his homily. The video pertained to religious vocations. It did not necessarily have anything to do with the readings. Is this acceptable or allowed (for lack of the proper term)? Thank you for considering my question.

I have done such things in my sordid past and cringe at the memory. No, ordinarily it is not appropriate to show a video in place of the homily. The homily is to be given by a priest or deacon and is meant to explain to the faithful the readings they have just heard.
